Joint angles are
important characteristics of a horses conformation and
should not be discarded.
The
terms open or closed joint relates to the angle of the
joint. An open joint is much like the effect that an
open door has on its hinge, and opposing this is the
closed joint, much like the effect the closed door has
on a hinge.
Basically this relates to the angles of
the prime joints, elbow, shoulder, hip, stifle and hock.
Joint angles affects many facets of horse conformation, assessment of
which and be used to help determine maturity level, uphill/downhill,
length of extension to stride, even power and speed in
certain joints.
