(article - work in progress, expect updates)

Joint angles are important characteristics of a horses conformation and should not be discarded.

The terms open or closed joint relates to the angle of the joint. An open joint is much like the effect that an open door has on its hinge, and opposing this is the closed joint, much like the effect the closed door has on a hinge.

Basically this relates to the angles of the prime joints, elbow, shoulder, hip, stifle and hock.

Joint angles affects many facets of horse conformation, assessment of which and be used to help determine maturity level, uphill/downhill, length of extension to stride, even power and speed in certain joints.
